Acne

acne

Acne is a skin condition that occurs as a result of a disorder of the pilosebaceous unit (hair follicle). This results in an overproduction of sebum and hyperkeratinization which causes the follicles to become clogged with oil and dead skin cells leading to the formation of comedones – whiteheads and blackheads. This allows for the growth of Cutibacterium acnes (C.Acnes) bacteria which causes inflammation resulting in development of papules and pustules.

There are two main types of acne; Comedonal and Inflammatory.

Comedonal Acne is commonly associated with Whiteheads, small flesh-coloured spots or bumps that form because a hair follicle is completely blocked by sebum and dead skin cells.

It is also associated with Blackheads. Small, dark-coloured spots that may appear as slightly raised bumps. The skin around a blackhead usually appears normal, while the centre of the blackhead is darker than the surrounding area.

Inflammatory Acne is commonly associated with, Papules, Pustules, Nodules and Cysts. This type of acne is characterized by red, inflamed, often painful lumps and bumps across the skin.
